OpenOffice servers shudder to halt 3:18PM, Tuesday 14th October 2008
Massive demand for OpenOffice 3 on the first day of release has brought its hosting servers grinding to a halt.

Visitors to the site are currently being greeted with the message: "Apologies - our website is struggling to cope with the unprecedented demand for the new release 3.0 of OpenOffice.org. The technical teams are trying to come up with a solution."

On the bright side, the site goes on to offer a fairly comprehensive list of mirror sites ensuring users aren't unduly delayed in their rush to get their hands on the impressive office suite.

PC Pro didn't have any problems downloading from the mirror, however, the accompanying Bit Torrent link proved a much speedier method of getting the 142MB package.

Though the latest iteration shares the same skin as is predecessor, it now features support for the ODF 1.2 and OOXML formats, a new start centre and the new Solver application.

Read our first look at Open Office 3 here.

It's also free, and available on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. Try it out here.
